Exhaustion is real when you’re a mama. My mind seems to be on continuous overdrive these days, which makes falling asleep nearly impossible. After researching, I finally bit the bullet on an oil diffuser! I’ve heard so many wonderful reviews, so figured I’d try it out for myself. First on my list: research the best essential oils for sleep. I wanted to give some natural remedies a try before anything else. Bonus that this oil diffuser lights up and creates the most soothing atmosphere ever.
ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SLEEP
Scientific research suggests that aromatherapy can relieve stress, anxiety, physical discomfort and mood levels. (Among many other things) In fact, essential oils have been used for centuries to promote physical and mental wellness. As someone who struggles with anxiety, I’m always looking to find the best natural, mind-body remedies to create better sleep. I absolutely loved reading this study on how essential oils helped disrupted sleep (in nurses) and helped improve overall sleep quality. Scientists are starting to understand more benefits with rigorous testing. I’ll be sharing more of my favorite essential oils, including: essential oils for babies, essential oils for anxiety and essential oils for colds. Stay tuned for those blog posts!
HOW TO USE AN OIL DIFFUSER | ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SLEEP
Simply add a little water, a few drops of oil — that’s it! The built-in timer and automatic shut off make it perfect for night owls like myself. I wanted an oil diffuser that looked cute in my space. I highly recommend the Serene House oil diffusers. They’re so well made! They have a bunch, so make sure to check-out the entire Serene House line! 7 ESSENTIAL OILS FOR A BETTER SLEEP
VANILLA
A delicious scent! It’s always been one of my favorites (I seem to gravitate toward vanilla candles, too) Mainly known for stress relief and relaxation. Vanilla can lower blood pressure and calm the nervous system. Oh, and it has also been found to lift your mood which is always a plus! Sign me up! We’re expecting a high of negative 19 this week, need all of the help I can get. | SHOP MY VANILLA PICK — Make sure to check out this article to see more benefits of vanilla essential oil.
*LAVENDER*
Lavender is most definitely the most well-known and popular essential oils for sleep. (I take a lavender bubble bath every night) While lavender has many benefits, some of my favorites include: lower blood pressure, calming powers, and a heart rate reducer. Lavender can also help with pain relief. So cool, right? As a result, all of these factors contribute greatly to your ability to sleep easily. Additionally, lavender also calms nerves which helps the mind to stop from racing. Calming your thoughts is a sure fire way to calm your body into sleep mode! VALERIAN
Valerian has many sedative effects and remains an active ingredient in lots of nighttime sleep aids. Surprisingly, it’s used widely in Europe and has been for many centuries. Numerous studies have found valerian essential oils to be a great help for those suffering from insomnia. I haven’t given this one a try yet, but it’s next on my list! (I’ve been on the lavender kick lately) | SHOP MY VALERIAN ESSENTIAL OIL PICK
VETIVER
Have you guys heard of vetiver before? I hadn’t before I researched. Vetiver oil contains an earthy smell that has been found to be grounding, calming and stabilizing. Above all, the powerful oil has even been linked to reducing anger. All of these wonderful benefits contribute greatly to a wonderful night’s sleep! You won’t even need to count those sheep. JASMINE
Because Jasmine is a floral scent, it’s very effective at aiding sleep. Personally, I was surprised that jasmine has even been found to do a better job at aiding sleep than the popular scent of lavender. Definitely next on my list of sleep essential oils to try. SHOP MY JASMINE ESSENTIAL OIL PICK
SANDALWOOD
Sandalwood has a rather woody and rich scent, therefore, not everyone can tolerate. For those who like the scent of sandalwood, it has been found to promote longer durations of non-REM sleep which is essential for a peaceful night sleep. SHOP MY SANDALWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL PICK // Here’s a full list of sandalwood essential oil benefits. It’s also said to produce positive thoughts — sign me up!
BERGAMOT
This one is also new to me! Bergamot is an orange scent that has been found to be soothing. Citrus oils work differently for everyone, but whether they leave you feeling sleepy or refreshed — they can be used during the day or night. SHOP MY BERGAMOT ESSENTIAL OIL PICK
*If you’re using essential oils, pay attention to how you feel. What may work for me, may not work for you. You may need to experiment with a few different oils/blends before you find the one that works! I recommend starting with lavender, and working your way up the list. This is a great list of essential oil blends to consider, too!
