As a new mom, and business-owner — I officially understand the word exhausted. (I take back all of the times I said I was tired in my early 20’s, FYI) We’re in the midst of the joyful four month sleep regression, and it’s been real. Is this the part where I give my acceptance speech to coffee? (Literally, saves marriages on no sleep, ha). With the fatigue, and weariness comes the bad decision making. Endless nights of take-out (it adds up quickly) and failure to plan ahead. This has certainly cost my family unnecessary financial loss. A little behind-the-scenes: We’re both self-employed with a newborn, so the significance of budgeting is crucial. When I’m tired, the thought of grocery shopping is dreadful, to say the least. Can anyone else relate? Then, I had an epiphany.
When you’re not organized in life, you’re going to feel like a hamster on a wheel. You’re also going to feel extra exhausted when you’re eating poorly. (guilty!) I decided it was time to take back meal-planning ON A BUDGET. Full disclosure: I actually enjoy grocery shopping now. There’s nothing more satisfying than preparing homemade meals! (I’ve also been watching a ton of Food Network for inspiration). Last week, I had the pleasure of visiting Kmart’s new Welcome Center in partnership with Shop Your Way CASHBACK in points (more on that below). The member lounge features cozy seating so you can finalize your grocery list, charge your phone, and sip coffee throughout your trip. It also includes a play center for children (so you fellow mamas don’t lose your mind) winning! I had such a fun time exploring, and mingling with the sweetest staff over at Norridge, IL! - Earn points for shopping: Shop Your Way CASHBACK in points (available at Kmart and Sears) connects members with offers and experiences to help save time/money. Simply put: It rewards you for buying your favorite products/experiences. Example: For every Uber ride, you earn $2. Love Sephora? 5% cash-back in points is currently being offered. You guys, there are SO many! Most of these things you’re already buying. I’m a huge fan of reward systems because they’ll always work in your favor (and your wallet). Get knowledgable on the program, so you can start implementing savings too. If you have any questions, Kmart can definitely help! PS: There’s no catch. It’s literally a point system — that’s it!
- Buy the store brand: This is a little trick my mama taught me way back in the day! When you buy the store brand, you’re generally saving 50%. That’s going to save a ton of money in the long run, and they honestly taste just as good. You’ll start seeing the savings immediately.
- Avoid packaged foods: Things that are pre-cut, pre-marinated and proportioned are going to be more expensive. I know it’s more convenient, but you can easily marinate and package your own food when you get home. It will literally save you half the amount!
- Make a List & Meal Plan: One of my favorite things about Kmart’s Welcome Centers? The cozy seating provided. Plan your meal in the comfort of the store (without distraction) and take a few minutes to yourself. Recharge, sip some coffee and ease into a plan. Your meals don’t have to be grand, in fact: most recipes can be done in 15 minutes or less with leftovers to boot. Planning will take some more time, but in doing so — you’re saving so much money. Stay away from distraction. Always stand true to your list! Don’t give into temptations. (Easier said than done, I know)
- 10 grocery staples on a budget: I thought I’d leave you with my 10 favorite staples to keep on hand! Some of these will be common sense, but these are always stocked in my kitchen, no matter what. Versatility for the win!
- Eggs: Come on guys, duh! They are beyond versatile. Scramble, hard-boil, egg salad sandwiches, throw a fried-egg on top of your avocado toast. Breakfast, lunch or dinner: eggs are your friend.
- Parmesan Cheese: Cheese me! You’ll never catch me without this stuff — it’s gold. It’ll kick up your meal to the ultimate notch of yes. Another versatile topping.
- Pasta: Whole-wheat, brown-rice, orzo, linguine — the options are endless. Pasta is my BFF for many reasons (can you blame me?) It’s inexpensive, delicious and versatile. (are you catching a trend yet?)
- Apple: An easy go-to snack that’s good plain (with peanut butter, or caramel) in a salad, and beyond! Oh, and you know what they say: an apple a day keeps the doctor away!
- Fresh Herbs: Herbs make everything taste better. Plain and simple. My personal favorite is rosemary and chicken (with some lemon slices, yum!)
- Chicken Breasts: I always keep these in my freezer. The package will last for awhile and there are millions of recipes you can try. Grilled, char-broiled, fried — your move.
- Lemons: I always start my day with lemon water. Also delicious in salad dressing with a hint of olive oil, apple cider vinegar and salt/pepper. Delicious on poultry, too! Or, you can make lemonade! Duh!
- Quinoa: A little of this stuff goes far. I usually mix with leftover chicken/veggies but it’s also divine on salad.
- Potatoes: My husband is a huge fan of my roasted potatoes, so it has a permanent spot in the pantry. I like tossing on a pan-sheet with sausage and veggies. Super simple, affordable and delicious.
- Frozen Fish: A staple in our house. I’m a huge fan of frozen foods because they last a long time, and are another quick/healthy option for busy weeknights. Generally, buying in larger quantities will save you money.
